Cupping treatment involves heating and placing cups, usually made of glass, on the skin. By heating the air in the cup, a vacuum is created and when it is applied to the skin it stimulates the blood circulation The benefits of cupping are local pain relief, muscle relaxation and removes toxins. The cups are often placed on the back, neck and shoulders or a painful area.

Cupping can temporarily cause bruising and pain, depending on the suction created by the vacuum and the level of internal stagnation.

Gua sha is a natural, alternative therapy where the skin is scraped to improve blood circulation. This ancient Chinese technique provides better health and helps against chronic pain. Scraping of the skin is done with an instrument with smooth edges, with which short or long strokes are made over the body. Gua sha is usually performed on a person’s back, buttocks, neck, arms and legs. 

Gua sha helps against: inflammation, so it is often used to treat ailments that cause chronic pain, such as:

  • Arthritis and fibromyalgia,
  • Muscle and joint pain
  • Migraine, headache and neck pain
  • Insomnia
  • Irregular menstruation
  • Fear
  • Fatigue


Gua sha is safe but can be experienced as painful will temporarily change the appearance of the skin. Because it involves rubbing or scraping the skin with a massage tool, small blood vessels known as capillaries can burst near the surface of the skin. This can lead to bruises of the skin. Blue spots usually disappear within a few days.

Not suitable for:

  • if you have had surgery for the past six weeks.

  • if you suffer from coagulation disorders.
